A Tradition of Achievement
Pushing through pain and powering past doubt, 39 Marco Forester Middle School students recently crossed the finish line of the LA Marathon. This accomplishment continues a remarkable 25-year tradition started as a project by San Juan Capistrano Rotary's Ray Perez. The club remains a proud team sponsor today.
These young runners joined the iconic 39-year-old race alongside 26,000 participants, all as part of Students Run LA (SRLA). This program transforms adolescent lives one stride at a time. Marco Forester stood tall among 193 Southern California schools, including neighboring Vista Del Mar in San Clemente and Niguel Hills in Laguna Niguel.
The Journey to Marathon Day
The road to marathon day isn't paved overnight. Students in grades seven through twelve must secure parental permission, pass medical clearance, and commit to rigorous training.
Commitment and Preparation
Training begins long before the marathon. Students dedicate themselves to a demanding regimen that includes weekly long runs, speed work, and endurance exercises. Each run serves as preparation for the exhilarating day when they finally step onto the course.
To reward their dedication, SRLA provides training shirts, free running shoes after completing early community races, and the coveted marathon-day race uniform. These incentives keep students motivated throughout their journey.
Initially, the SJC Rotary provided the shoes and running gear. Now, the club underwrites the transportation and overnight stay in Los Angeles. This support significantly eases the financial burden on families while enhancing the overall experience for the young runners.
Race Day: The Big Event
March arrived, and these young athletes were ready for the challenge. On marathon day, excitement filled the air. Participants gathered, fueling each other’s enthusiasm and camaraderie.
SRLA boasts an astounding 99% finish rate. Marco Forester maintained that perfect record – every student who started crossed the finish line. This statistic is a testament to the students' hard work and the program's dedication to fostering resilience.
Overcoming Challenges
The marathon is not just a test of physical strength; it is also a mental challenge. Runners face a variety of obstacles along the 26.2-mile course. From fatigue to self-doubt, they must push through to achieve their goal.
With encouragement from coaches, mentors, and teammates, these young runners embrace the struggle. They learn valuable lessons in perseverance that extend far beyond the track.
Building Stronger Futures
With the continued sponsorship and support of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary club, Marco Forester's marathon tradition builds stronger runners and stronger character, one mile at a time.
Lessons Learned
Each student applies the lessons learned from training and racing to their daily lives. Whether in academics or personal endeavors, they realize that dedication and hard work pay off.
The social connections made throughout the training process enhance their learning experience. As they bond with their peers, they build lasting friendships that support their growth.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the LA Marathon is far more than a race for these students. It represents a journey of personal growth, community support, and the relentless pursuit of goals. The 39 Marco Forester Middle School students exemplify the spirit of determination as they challenge themselves and inspire others to do the same.
The tradition of SRLA and its impact on young lives will continue for years to come. As they lace up their running shoes, these students step forward into a brighter, more promising future.
