Note: This post is a thought experiment, not a recommendation. While it's about Rotary, the process of reimagining also applies to professions and businesses. Visualization is a useful technique to start discussions about planning for the future.
“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” - Napoleon Hill
When Rotary began in 1905, communication relied mainly on the telegraph for long-distance messaging and the postal service for regular correspondence. Telephones, though growing in use, were still limited and required manual switchboards. Newspapers and magazines were key for news and information.
Transportation was dominated by railroads for long-distance travel, with horse-drawn vehicles common for shorter trips. In fact, one of the first projects for the newly formed Rotary club in Chicago was purchasing a horse for a local doctor so he could make house calls. Automobiles were emerging but not yet widespread, and bicycles provided a practical option for individual travel. Steamships facilitated international and coastal journeys, and electric streetcars were popular in cities for public transit.
If Rotary International were founded today, it would look quite different while maintaining its core values and mission. Let's imagine how it might look if we were building a new foundation for the future.
The aim would be to deliver on a new Rotary brand promise: "Join Rotary to develop your leadership skills, expand your global network, and create meaningful impact in your community and beyond—all while forging lifelong friendships with diverse, action-oriented professionals."
Developing leadership skills through personalized plans and online learning
Expanding global networks via AI-powered matching and virtual reality experiences
Creating meaningful impact through data-driven project management and innovative solutions
Forging lifelong friendships by facilitating both digital and in-person connections among diverse professionals
You open the Rotary app on your smartphone. Your screen displays personalized project recommendations based on your interests and skills. A notification appears – your virtual mentor is ready for your monthly leadership development chat. With a tap, you join a VR classroom where Rotarians from around the globe gather to learn together.
Your feed shows updates from ongoing projects. A school in rural Guatemala, funded through Rotary's crowdfunding platform, is nearing completion. Blockchain technology allows you to track every dollar spent, ensuring transparency. Progress reports automatically inform all stakeholders and donors of the results. You can join a live stream from the construction site, observing in real-time as your contribution makes a tangible difference. You click to generate a post to your social media accounts.
At your local Rotary meeting, some members are physically present, while others join via holographic projections. As you discuss your club's upcoming local health equity project, you send a note to your circle of friends with the opportunity to participate - either by volunteering or donating.
Interact and Rotaract members stay in touch with their peers and mentors via the same app. The contacts they make in school and with their mentors are long-lasting to help them succeed later in life. They start new projects, build their teams and post their success automatically via social media.
Your club decides to partner with a tech startup to develop an innovative solution for starting a new project in Central America. This collaboration is part of Rotary's new innovation labs, where members work alongside experts to tackle global challenges using cutting-edge technology. AI-powered translation software enables all participants to fully engage, regardless of their location or native language.
The transition from Rotary's traditional structure of clubs, districts, and zones to this new digital-first model would be gradual but transformative. While local clubs would remain the foundation for developing lifelong friendships and meeting new people, their operations would become more fluid, with hybrid meetings and flexible attendance options.
Districts would evolve into dynamic, project-focused networks rather than geographic entities, transforming into hubs of expertise and resources, facilitating cross-cultural collaborations and knowledge sharing. This new structure would emphasize agility, accountability and impact over hierarchical boundaries, allowing Rotarians to respond more effectively to global and local needs.
Rotary's membership structure is now more flexible, with options ranging from full-time engagement to project-based participation. This has opened doors for time-challenged younger professionals and underrepresented communities, bringing fresh perspectives and diverse skills to the organization.
The upcoming international convention will feature both in-person and virtual attendance, with avatars mingling in a metaverse replica of the event space. The convention will include a hackathon, where Rotarians will collaborate on developing tech solutions for pressing social issues.
Your Rotary profile includes an "impact score" that reflects your recent contributions, adding a competitive edge to service and motivating members to stay engaged. The AI suggests a potential collaboration with a Rotarian in Australia whose skills complement yours perfectly for an upcoming project.
“This is a changing world, we must be prepared to change with it. The story of Rotary will have to be written again and again.” - Paul Harris
This reimagined Rotary International seamlessly blends tradition with innovation, staying true to its core values while adapting to the needs of a new generation. It incorporates:
A digital-first approach with robust mobile and web platforms and a single data repository for membership, fundraising and maintaining club websites
Automated permission-based posting to each member's social media accounts
Enhanced global connectivity through AI-powered matching and virtual experiences
Modernized project management using data-driven tools and blockchain technology
Personalized member experiences with AI-driven recommendations and gamification
Streamlined governance using online voting and agile project teams
Continuous innovation through partnerships with tech companies and regular idea competitions
As we look to the future, the spirit of Rotary – that commitment to "Service Above Self" – will continue to thrive, powered by human compassion and cutting-edge technology working in tandem. This digital-age Rotary isn't just keeping pace – it's leading the charge, showing how a long-standing organization can reinvent itself to remain relevant, impactful, and truly global in the 21st century and beyond.
Brilliant. More please.
Outstanding Thought Experiment! Thanks for sharing!
