The Harmony of Service

Have you ever watched an orchestra just before the music begins? There's that quiet buzz, a shared focus. Then, the conductor steps up. They don't play an instrument themselves, yet their guidance transforms individual notes into a breathtaking symphony.
It was Past Rotary International President Cliff Dochterman who beautifully captured this idea – that leading a Rotary club is much like conducting an orchestra. And thinking about our own San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club, this analogy truly resonates.
Our club president holds the 'score' – our shared vision, inspired by Rotary International and tailored to the needs right here in San Juan Capistrano and beyond. They don't personally hammer every nail on a service project or write every grant application.
Instead, like a conductor, their role is about harmony and direction. They help set the tempo for our initiatives, ensuring we have focus and purpose. They listen intently – not just to the overall progress, but to the dedicated efforts within our committees. Think of the meticulous planning from Jack Kahler on the upcoming golf tournament, or the passion Marc Franz brought to our Swallows Day Pancake Breakfast – each is a vital section contributing to the whole.
A skilled conductor knows when to bring forward the woodwinds or let the strings soar.
Similarly, effective leadership within our San Juan Capistrano Rotary recognizes the unique talents each member brings. They see the financial acumen of Cindy Russell, the communication skills of Linda Hakim, and the boundless energy of Aaron and Jacki Lansford. Leadership here is about encouraging Jerry Neve and Greg Sykes to guide newer members, or empowering Jeff Roseler to take the lead on a new role perfectly suited to their skills.
The goal isn't for the leader to be the loudest instrument, but to help blend all our contributions – our time, talents, and 'Service Above Self' – into something impactful. They foster an environment where every member, every Dave Koffs or Tom Judge feels their part is essential to the beautiful music we create together.
And that 'music'? It's the tangible difference our San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club makes: the scholarships awarded, the support for local youth, the global health initiatives we contribute to, the friendships we build. It's the melody of positive change echoing through our community.
It’s a powerful reminder, inspired by Cliff Dochterman's wisdom, that leadership is about enabling, collaborating, and guiding our diverse talents towards our common, wonderful goal of service. Here's to our club leaders, past and present, and to every single member playing their vital part in our San Juan Capistrano Rotary orchestra!
Ray, you never cease to amaze me!
