The Power of Curiosity

The role of curiosity often goes underestimated. The insatiable drive to question, explore, and not be satisfied with the status quo is a trait that can set apart successful entrepreneurs from the rest while at the same time making them a pain in the ass. As I reflect on the lives of my two grandfathers, each embodying curiosity in distinct fields, I am reminded of the profound impact this attribute has had on my own life.

My paternal grandfather, a physicist who worked for the National Bureau of Standards, dedicated his life to the sciences. His days were filled with a relentless pursuit of understanding the fundamental laws and effects of magnetics and how they could be used in both the detecting anamolies and defects for the war effort and industry.

In stark contrast, my maternal grandfather, who died when I was very young, was a visionary entrepreneur who spearheaded projects to bring electricity to rural communities. He experienced both the highs of success and the lows of failure. His entrepreneurial spirit was fueled by an insatiable desire to explore new opportunities and seek innovative solutions to complex challenges. He passed along his restless curiosity to both of his daughters and through them to us grandkids.

From both of them, I learned that curiosity is not merely a trait but a mindset - a way of approaching challenges with an open mind and a willingness to explore uncharted territories. It is the curiosity to ask "why" (or "why not") and the courage to search for the answers.

Curiosity is also a muscle that needs to be exercised daily. It is the driving force behind all learning, propelling us to venture into the unknown. It's what the best teachers promote and encourage, allowing their students to question what and how they are learning. That leads to innovation and how to leave a meaningful impact on our world.

I agree with you, Ray. We should all strive to cultivate curiosity daily. You've clearly been dedicated to growth, innovation, and making a lasting positive impact on others and their communities. Whether it's because of your grandfathers or your involvement with Rotary, you’ve become an excellent teacher and mentor for both curiosity and community service.
